Comments and feedback from Ultrax speech therapy clients

A small number of child clients are enrolled to undertake speech therapy using the ultrasound displays we are developing at certain strategic points throughout the Ultrax project.  This is to help assess the efficacy of the proposed speech therapy system.

Upon completion of their course of therapy sessions, the clients and their carers are encouraged to give feedback and comments on what they thought about the ultrasound-based therapy sessions.  We include all free-form comments here as and when provided by clients who have completed their therapy schedule.

(NOTE: names have been changed to preserve client anonymity)

Calum (completed September 2012)

Question: Please comment on whether or not you think using ultrasound made it easier for your child to achieve his speech therapy goals.

- "Calum had private and NHS speech therapy over an extensive period, specifically focussed on the 'k' sound.  Despite this, and their hard work, he was unable to make this sound.  However, with ultrasound, he quickly grasped the correct positioning of the tongue and was able to generalise the sound."

Question: Any other comments?  For example, do you think taking part in the research project has been worthwhile?  How have your child's communication abilities changed?

- "We are delighted that Calum was able to take part in this research project.  I was initially sceptical - especially when I saw the helmet!  His confidence has increased and he is now able to communicate clearly, without anxiety.  We really appreciate the hard work and care taken with Calum."

James (completed September 2012)

Question: Please comment on whether or not you think using ultrasound made it easier for your child to achieve his speech therapy goals.

- "Yes - using the visual seemed to help James position his tongue."

Question: Any other comments?  For example, do you think taking part in the research project has been worthwhile?  How have your child's communication abilities changed?

- "Yes - James has benefitted from participating in the project.  His 'r' sound seems to have improved significantly when he concentrates."
